課程概述

We will read from the canon of late nineteenth century American fiction. The literary texts mostly belong to the movements known as Realism and Naturalism, but we will also branch out to include notable works of other literary convictions. In accompaniment, we will also read studies of these works and the period, chosen with an eye to their variety in approach and topic. The instructor's interest lies in the social issues addressed in these works, but this should be taken as a starting point rather than a restriction.

課程目標
The purpose of this course is at least fourfold: to familiarize you with representative works by major authors in this period; to explore methods to read these works; to inventory recent trends in related scholarship; and to try to understand what we do in literary studies, how we do it and why.
課程要求
You are expected to come to class, lead the discussion once or twice a semester, take part in the discussions, and give oral presentations (10%) of your midterm project (30%) and final paper (60%).
